Leinster House Gates to be Opened to the Public for Second Houses of the Oireachtas Family Day

Following the success of the inaugural Houses of the Oireachtas Family Day last year, the Houses of the Oireachtas will open its gates once again later this month and invite the public to attend the 2009 “Oireachtas Family Day.” The event will take place on June 27 and 28 June in the grounds of Leinster House.
During the day, visitors will have an opportunity to go into the Dáil and Seanad Chambers and tour the historic corridors of Leinster House, as well as enjoy the numerous other activities happening throughout the weekend.
This event provides a wonderful opportunity to visit Leinster House, with public tours running during both days. Visitors will also have the chance to see the Houses of the Oireachtas exhibition “Commemorating 90 years of Dáil Éireann,” listen to re-enactments of famous historical speeches, attend information lectures and enjoy live music performances.
Ceann Comhairle John O’Donoghue T.D. said, “I am very pleased that once again we are opening the gates of Leinster House to the public to give families an enjoyable and informative experience in their national parliament. Last summer we saw an unprecedented public demand to attend family day and many thousands of people who wished to attend could not be accommodated. This level of interest makes a clear statement that people do wish to connect with their parliament and their politicians and the political process, which is at the heart of democracy, in this our 90th year.”
Cathaoirleach Senator Pat Moylan said; “Oireachtas Family Day is about providing a friendly environment for people to both enjoy themselves and find out more about their parliament. I believe the event can inspire people to increase their engagement with politics as well as being a fun day out for families.”
Leinster House will come alive with activity and the atmosphere both inside and outside will be electric. The spirit of an open house and friendly fun will be created by a series of free events planed for Leinster Lawn including:
Bookings/Ticketing Entry is free, but due to capacity constraints our numbers are limited. Pre-booking is essential. Tickets can be reserved on www.oireachtasevents.ie or by phoning the lo-call number 1890 252 808. People are encouraged to book early.
Tours of Leinster House will be available on a first come first served basis with access for 1,500 people approx. Visitors interested in taking the tour are advised that on arrival they should go directly to the start of tour location at the Leinster House entrance to ensure that they are accommodated.

- Musical performances throughout the day including Irish Traditional, Jazz, Pipe and Brass Bands.
- Students of the Gaiety School of Acting performing famous Irish political debates.
- The best of Irish talent from our leading street performers
- Photo journalism exhibition “Commemorating 90 years of Dáil Éireann”
